The purpose of this study is to provide insights for enhancing performance by examining the influence of achievement goal orientation of university handball players on team cohesion and performance. Data were collected from 140 players from March to April 2025, using convenience sampling. Statistical analyses conducted with SPSS 29.0 included frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Key findings are: First, significant differences in achievement goal orientation were observed based on playing experience, while team cohesion varied significantly with gender, grade level, and playing experience. Team performance differences were noted based on grade level and playing experience. Second, task goal orientation positively influenced individual-social, group-social, individual-task, and group-task cohesion. Third, task goal orientation was found to positively impact athletic performance, teamwork, and game performance. Fourth, team cohesion positively affected athletic performance, with individual-social and individual-task cohesion influencing it. All cohesion types positively influenced teamwork, and individual-task and group-task cohesion enhanced game performance. Individual-task cohesion also positively impacted competitive performance. This study offers foundational data on achievement goal orientation’s role in improving team cohesion and performance, aiding players in competitive environments. By leveraging these insights, the study aims to enhance team dynamics and performance, contributing to improved game results on the field.
