[Purpose]Over the years, there has been research on/about how to improve fish yield. Through the adoption or utilization of novel feed resources. Therefore, this study investigated maggot meal diets on antioxidant activities and gene expressions in juvenile Clarias gariepinus (African catfish).
[Method]The Maggot meal (MMDs) were incorporated with the other feed ingredients to produce 25% (MMD1), 50% (MMD2), 75% (MMD3), and 100% (MMD4) diets, while the control diet (CON) was without the maggot meal. Nitric oxide (NO), Malondialdehyde (MDA), Catalase, Superoxide dismutase (SOD), and Reduced Glutathione (GSH) were evaluated. The mRNA expression of Growth hormone (GH), Heat Shock Protein (HSP70), Melatonin (MEL 1C), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) was investigated in the liver and muscle of C. gariepinus fed with varying doses of Maggot meals (MMDs) using reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction.
[Results]There were significant (p>0.05) variations in all antioxidant parameters in all the treatments. There was a significant upregulation (p<0.05) in the gene expression of GH, HSP70, MEL1C, and TNF-α in fish fed MMD1 compared to fish fed control in both tissue groups. In addition, there was significant downregulation (p<0.05) in interleukin 1 (IL-1β) gene expression in the liver of fish fed MMD2.
[Conclusion] This study suggests that dietary variations involving MMDs have the potential to alleviate oxidative stress and improve immune responses of this fish species.
