In severe accidents of LWRs, it is assumed that molten fuel jets fall into the shallow pool of cooling water, are atomized and accumulate on the floor as fuel debris. To predict the spreading of debris, it is important to reveal droplet formation as the elementary process of atomization. Although interfacial shear stress caused by the velocity difference between the jet and surrounding fluid is important for atomization, the relation between droplet formation and interfacial shear stress is unclear. In this study, droplet formation was visualized, and the measurement of interfacial shear stress by the combination of PIV applied to the fluids and LIF method to identify their interface was conducted. We discuss the relation investigated based on them.
