[2I14]Effect of solidification shrinkage of liquid LiPb on exfoliation of α-Al2O3 layer formed on FeCrAl alloys

FeCrAl alloy reveals an excellent corrosion resistance due to the formation of α-Al2O3 layer on the surface. However, the layer could exfoliate in liquid LiPb and the cause was not clarified so far. The effect of solidification shrinkage of liquid LiPb in the cooling process on the layer exfoliation was investigated. The pre-oxidized specimen of FeCrAl alloy was installed with liquid LiPb in the test capsule and the capsule was kept at 873 K for 100 hours. The test capsule was inverted to remove liquid LiPb from the specimen surface after the corrosion test. The layer exfoliation was recognized regardless of the adhesion of solidified LiPb on the surface.
