New Approaches to Assessing the Environmental Impact of Chemicals: Bridging Ecotoxicology and Ecology through Environmental DNA/RNA Monitoring
Organizer:
Kyoshiro Hiki (National Institute for Environmental Studies),
Hiroshi Honda (Kao Corporation)
There has been growing interest in addressing biodiversity loss, especially with the adoption of international biodiversity frameworks. To achieve 'Nature Positive,' it is essential to accurately understand and strategically reduce the impacts of human activities, including chemical pollution, which is identified as one of the factors contributing to biodiversity loss. Ecological surveys and physiological response analyses using environmental DNA/RNA are emerging as promising new monitoring techniques that can assess the environmental impacts of chemicals from the perspectives of biodiversity and mechanisms of toxic action. In this symposium, we will review the latest research on the use of environmental DNA/RNA for the assessment of chemical pollution.

Environmental DNA : Frontiers of On-site Implementation
Organizer:
Mika Gunji (Nippon Koei Co., Ltd), Jiro Okitsu (OYO Co., Ltd), Kenji Tsuri (KenKan Consultants Co., Ltd.), Munehiro Oota (KenKan Consultants Co., Ltd.), Keiko Muraoka (Public Works Research Institute)
In conducting river management, the use of environmental DNA surveys with MiFish, alongside fish capture surveys, has become increasingly common for understanding fish fauna. In addition, the research field is witnessing rapid development of new technologies that vary in terms of analysis targets, DNA domains, and methods. Consequently, the use of environmental DNA in river management is expanding in response to these developments. The real-world examples and discusses the future prospects of environmental DNA utilization will be presents on this session.
