江戸時代における佐渡金銀山の坑内では、採掘・採鉱に従事する金掘大工をはじめ、掘り出した鉱石や廃石の運び出しなどの雑業に従事する穿子（ほりこ）、地下からの湧水を汲み上げる水替など、多様な人々が働いていた。これらの人々と労働編成、および坑内労働に関係する山言葉（鉱山用語）などについて、18世紀中期頃の鉱山技術書や鉱山絵巻などの史料から検討した。
