Wire ropes are widely used in cranes and other material-handling machinery because they combine high tensile strength with flexibility. During service, however, wire ropes repeatedly pass over sheaves under tension. This cyclic bending-over-sheave (CBOS) loading gradually causes wire breakage and may eventually lead to rope failure. Therefore, evaluating the fatigue characteristics of wire ropes is essential for safe operation and rational replacement planning. The author stayed at the Institute of Mechanical Handling and Logistics (IFT), University of Stuttgart, as a visiting researcher for approximately one year from February 2025, and conducted collaborative research on the CBOS fatigue of wire ropes. The Department of Rope Technology at IFT has extensive testing facilities and expertise related to ropes, providing an effective research environment for experimental studies on rope technology. This presentation first briefly introduces the Department of Rope Technology at IFT, and then reports an experimental investigation focusing on the effect of the wire rope wrapping angle over the sheave on fatigue life under CBOS loading.
