Many researchers in pharmaceutical sciences have devoted their efforts to developing medicines that contribute to life sciences. Meanwhile, the environmental impact of pharmaceutical development has become a global concern due to the overuse of medicines and their subsequent release into aquatic environments. Indeed, as highlighted in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the protection of water environments is a major social issue. To this end, qualitative and quantitative investigations of causative species are required to elucidate their effects on ecological systems. In this context, the target water environments range from the microscale (i.e., cells) to the macroscale (i.e., oceans), leading to the concept of "cross-scale analysis." To address the above issues, we have launched a collaborative team comprising researchers from diverse fields, including molecular recognition chemistry, analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, nanotechnology, microfluidics, and marine science. This symposium provides a platform for interdisciplinary discussion through invited lectures by leading researchers engaged in related efforts.
