Functional cosmetics, which aim to care for skin concerns such as age spots and wrinkles, deliver effective results to consumers by delivering the right ingredients in the suitable concentrations to the targeted areas of the skin. Developing functional cosmetics with whitening or anti-wrinkle properties requires a multidisciplinary approach, including the search for ingredients, evaluating their efficacy and safety, and formulating products that consider the ingredients' skin penetration and usability. This cosmetic research is based on a variety of scientific knowledge and methods, including pharmaceutical sciences. This symposium, co-hosted with the Japanese Cosmetic Science Society, will introduce examples of ingredient search and of in vitro and skin efficacy evaluation in the development of functional cosmetics. Regarding cosmetic safety, we will also outline safety assurance and alternatives to animal testing, as well as the importance of collecting post-marketing information on adverse reactions to improve safety in the future, along with examples of cosmetic-related contact dermatitis.
