In the digital era, secure communication has been extremely essential along with the high speed and large date rates. The conventional systems (optical wireless) for high-speed data transfer are affected by numerous environmental factors (fog, rain, dust). In addition, the security aspects are major limitation for future generation systems. Therefore, it is high time to explore the innovative techniques (quantum) in order to improve the performance and ensure enhanced data security of conventional systems. In this work, potential of quantum technology is explored for optical quantum communication systems in challenging conditions. The Quantum Bit Error Rate (QBER) for an ideal condition range from 0.1% to 1%, under typical conditions it falls between 1% and 5%, and in challenging conditions, it varies between 5% and 10%. From the discussions, QBER in foggy weather at a distance of 50 km ranges between 18% and 20%, while in clear weather it ranges between 8% and 10%. This can be reduced by the practical implementation of Quantum Key Distribution and the use of various error-correcting codes.
