The Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), despite its simple structure, is a highly versatile optical component used in a wide range of applications, including filtering, modulation, sensing, and signal processing. Since its operation is typically analyzed under continuous-wave (CW) excitation, its potential as an optical differentiator, particularly under pulsed conditions, has remained relatively overlooked. In this work, we explore the MZI’s capability to perform temporal differentiation in numerical simulations by introducing an appropriate path delay between its two arms. We further propose two advanced configurations: an MZI with a single feedback loop and a cascaded double-MZI structure to realize higher-order optical differentiation.
