The synthetic antiferromagnet (SyAFs) have attracted interest for antiferromagnetic spintronics. A SyAF with the W interlayer is a candidate for improving the device performance. Nevertheless, there are very limited works on antiferromagnetic coupling through the W layer. This study systematically investigates the interlayer exchange coupling in CoFeB/W/CoFeB trilayers. Thin films with the W layer thickness of 1.2–2.0 nm showed spin-flip behavior, indicating the antiferromagnetic coupling. Structural analysis and extended x-ray absorption fine structure revealed the thickness-dependent changes in the W crystal structure. Transport measurements on microfabricated devices demonstrated spintronic functionality.
