Purpose
From 1895 to 1945, Taiwan was under Japanese rule. During this period, Japan implemented numerous constructions and systems. Taiwan's first kindergarten was established in 1897 in Tainan City and gradually developed over time. Today, when kindergartens in Taiwan conduct community activity programs, many of the institutions or facilities they visit were built during the Japanese colonial period. Helping young children learn about the origins of these community institutions or facilities can enhance their understanding of historical context and further strengthen their sense of community identity.

Method
This study focuses on a kindergarten in New Taipei City, Taiwan, selecting several community institutions or facilities that children frequently encounter. Using VR technology, virtual environments were created, allowing children to experience the community setting in the classroom through specially designed goggles. The research examines children’s observations and feelings toward these community institutions or facilities. To provide historical context, old photographs of these institutions or facilities from the Japanese colonial period were presented for comparison, enabling the children to perceive the changes over time.

Results
Most children found the VR experience of community institutions or facilities to be novel and fascinating, allowing them to observe many details and deepen their impression of these places. Additionally, by comparing old photographs from the Japanese colonial period, they were able to identify and analyze details, expressing admiration and appreciation for the establishment of these institutions or facilities during that era.
