The rapid growth of internet usage has made phishing threats a significant global concern. Phishing scams involve deceiving individuals into revealing sensitive information, such as passwords, credit card details, and personal data. Over the years, various detection mechanisms have been proposed to combat phishing attempts, utilizing different methodologies to identify deceptions. This paper comprehensively surveys the methodologies, insights, and prospects in phishing detection. We discuss different detection approaches, which are primarily classified into three categories: content-based, visual similarity based, and URL-based detections. We conduct a detailed comparison of the state-of-the-art works in the field, and ultimately, we summarize our observations in a constructive report to improve the understanding of phishing detection.
