It is well known that the properties of the liquid surface (gas-liquid interface) and liquid-liquid interface change dramatically over a nanoscale thickness, and that phenomena not observed in the bulk can be observed. Recent developments in photochemistry, analytical chemistry, and laser technology have led to advances in research on catalytic reactions occurring on the surface of water. For example, it has been found that photochemical reaction rates increase on liquid surfaces1), and it has also been suggested that aerosols in the Earth's atmosphere are related to global climate change and ozone layer depletion. A liquid suspended in the air has an ideal spherical shape, and if the vibration of the liquid is measured by light scattering, the surface tension of the liquid can be determined2), and it is hoped that various physical and chemical phenomena on the liquid surface can be analyzed. Until now, we have developed a magnetic levitation technology for water using four permanent magnets3), and we have been able to levitate water droplets with a diameter of around 0.1 mm. In considering the arrangement of magnets for magnetic levitation, we have discovered that it is possible to levitate water using only two magnets.
