The first wall of the reactor vessel of a nuclear fusion reactor is of major importance since it holds the instruments required for the fusion to occur. It is exposed directly to neutrons and alpha particles, degrading its mechanical integrity. To shield it from this damage, molten metal walls have been proposed in different reactor designs, with the added benefit of transporting the energy generated. This research aim is to understand the thermodynamic behavior of liquid metal while being in a running a fusion reactor.
The designs of KOYO-F and LIFT are used to determine geometry and parameters to be used in simulations. The software PHITS and Ansys are used to calculate the deposited energy in the reactor chamber by the fusion reaction and to simulate the fluid mechanics and thermodynamics of the liquid metal, respectively.
With the current simulation configuration and parameters, the temperature that the liquid metal reaches is detrimental to the mechanical properties to the reactor vessel and more complex simulations are required for verification and design proposals.
