Plastic litter (PL) is a global environmental problem that increasingly threatens the health of aquatic ecosystems and poses socioeconomic and health risks to humanity. Several optical passive remote sensing techniques, such as panchromatic cameras, multi/hyperspectral sensors, and thermal infrared sensors, have already been studied in relation to PL remote sensing in controlled experiments or in real marine environments. On the other hand, the possibility of PL detection by LiDAR has been lightly explored. In this paper, we report the results of plastic litter measurements made under controlled conditions using hyperspectral fluorescence LiDAR.
