We have developed highly-oriented J-aggregates of bisazo dyes. The formation mechanisms of these J-aggregates have been investigated, revealing their localized formation within the films. In this study, the emission and absorption spectra of the films were carefully measured to evaluate the intrinsic optical properties of the J-aggregates. Although azo dyes are generally known to emit little fluorescence, we confirmed emission from the J-aggregates in the thin films.
