We evaluated the axial and lateral resolution of a terahertz-wave 3D imaging system based on a subcarrier frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar and a resonant-tunneling-diode (RTD) oscillator, and compared the measured results with the theoretical values. The axial resolution was found to be 38 mm or 36 mm, depending on the criterion being used, compared with a theoretical value of 25 mm for an ideal FMCW radar. The lateral resolution was found to be 4.0 mm, compared to the theoretical value of 4.5 mm for the spot size. The reasons for these discrepancies will be discussed.
