*Prasad Sambhu1 (1. Department of Physical Education,Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh, India)
Aim of the study: The study was carried out to understand the determinants of sleep, which is crucial for addressing sleep-related issues and promoting optimal sleep health. Methods: Self-made questionnaire was used to identify the factors affecting sleep quality. Further, the questionnaire was circulated among the students pursuing their studies in different universities with different socio-economic backgrounds. Factor analysis was used to identify the potential factors that affect sleep quality. Result: The study revealed that cultural influences are one of the critical factors in sleep behaviours and perceptions. Practices such as meditation, yoga, and Ayurveda impact sleep quality and duration. Disparities in income, education, and access to healthcare services affect sleep quality and duration. Widespread use of smartphones, computers, and other electronic devices, particularly before bedtime, interferes with sleep onset and quality. Moreover, the constant connectivity facilitated by smartphones and social media platforms induces anxiety, interferes with relaxation before sleep. Conclusions: The interventions must be adopted that consider cultural, socio-economic, environmental, and individual factors to determine the factors necessary for quality sleep.
