Fruits and vegetables are critical sources of essential nutrients and support livelihoods across their value chains — from farmers and processors to traders — making them central to food security, nutrition and economic development. About 30 percent of food consumed globally and 20 percent of global food exports come from more than 1000 species of fruits and vegetables. Yet investment in research and development for many of these crops remains sub-optimal, particularly in countries where food insecurity and malnutrition are most widespread. FAO’s forthcoming report “Unlocking the full potentials of fruits and vegetables globally” (Global Report), will present trends in production, marketing and consumption, and identify key value-chain constraints to inform priority interventions. 

The IHC, organized under the auspices of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), is a leading global scientific forum that brings together researchers, scientists, industry and other value-chain actors to exchange knowledge on advancements in the horticultural sector. The IHC 2026, to be held in Kyoto, Japan, under the theme “Exploring the Diversity of Horticulture”, offers an important opportunity for FAO to showcase its horticulture-related work to the global community of practice and development partners, and to receive feedback — hence the proposal for a side event.
