[Purpose] Glycyrrhiza glabra and Platycodon grandiflorus, recognized as traditional medicinal herbs, have been incorporated into cuisines and local ointments for decades. However, limited research has been conducted on their immunostimulatory properties and underlying mechanisms.
[Methods] In this study, we investigated the ability of root extracts from G. glabra and P. grandiflorus to stimulate cytokine production, specifically interleukin-12 (IL-12), interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and interferon-α (IFN-α), as well as their effects on macrophage phagocytic activity using the THP-1 cell line.
[Result] We found that the root extracts from G. glabra significantly enhanced the production of IL-12 and IFN-γ and promoted macrophage phagocytosis, surpassing the effects of the positive control, Lactococcus lactis strain Plasma (LC-Plasma). However, neither root extracts induced higher levels of IFN-α compared to LC-Plasma. These findings suggest that both G. glabra and P. grandiflorus exhibit immunostimulatory effects and hold promise as potential therapeutic agents for immune-related disorders. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these effects.
