[2Bp-07]Investigation of satiety enhancing effect of cell walls derived from baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae)-Randomized, Placebo-controlled, Double-blind Crossover Study-

[Objective] Yeast cell walls, the residue after extraction of yeast extract, are contained rich in dietary fiber and protein. Previous research revealed that the protein components in yeast cell walls were digested more slowly in the gastrointestinal tract compared to whey protein and soy protein. The slow digestion in the gastrointestinal tract could lead to a slow increase in blood glucose concentration, which result in a prolonged gastric retention time by the central nervous system and an enhancement of satiety by the peripheral nervous system. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate whether yeast cell walls have a satiety-enhancing effect.
[Methods] A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover study was conducted with 20 healthy adults. The test food consisted of a beverage containing 9.0g of yeast cell walls derived from baker's yeast or a placebo beverage with dextrin to match the caloric ingestion. Subjective evaluation questionnaires using VAS were conducted every 30 minutes from before intake to 240 minutes after ingestion. Blood samples were also collected at the same time as the questionnaires, and the concentration of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) in plasma was measured.
[Results] The group that consumed 9.0g of yeast cell walls showed significantly increased satiety at 30 minutes and 60 minutes after ingestion compared to the placebo group. Additionally, the concentration of GLP-1 in plasma was significantly higher in the group that consumed yeast cell walls compared to the placebo group from 120 minutes to 240 minutes after intake. Furthermore, no adverse events considered to be caused by the test food were observed.
